Lately, I’ve seen plenty of parents who are struggling with their child’s eating habits. Sometimes, this has carried on into adulthood.
Clients often come to see me as adults because they want to broaden their diet or they’re embarrassed in social situations that involve food.
For both adults and children, I’ve had good success in turning fussy eating around — often where every other tactic has failed!
What Causes Fussy Eating?
Sometimes, fussy eating is a phase and you can introduce problem foods after a few attempts. Food tastes can change as children get older. They may accept foods that they had rejected.
If it carries on, there can be other factors involved. It’s not known exactly what causes fussy eating but it can include:
- Research has suggested that fussy eating can be linked to anxiety disorders.
- Some fussy eaters have had bad experiences with certain foods as a child. This can affect their beliefs about food.
- If you’re also a fussy eater, it can rub off on your children.
How to Fix a Fussy Eater
Fussy eating can be a big concern for parents. Many of my clients worry their child isn’t getting good nutrition, especially if they’re very fussy.
Ideally, you want your child to be eating foods from the four main food groups:
- Fruits and vegetables
- Starchy carbs such as potatoes, rice, bread, and pasta
- Dairy products (or dairy alternatives if lactose is a problem)
- Proteins such as eggs, meat, fish, beans, and pulses
You may need to try some foods several times before they’re accepted. A few tips that can improve fussy eating include:
- Eating together can give your fussy eater a chance to copy you when you eat problem foods.
- Give small amounts of problem foods and offer lots of praise if they eat even a little bit.
- If it’s not eaten, take it away and offer it again at a later date. Forcing the issue isn’t likely to help.
- Using food as a reward can create positive links to some foods and negative ones with others. This can exaggerate fussy eating habits.
Hypnotherapy for Fussy Eaters
If you’ve had no success in introducing problem foods into your child’s diet, it may be time to look at other options. If you’re an adult who wants to move past fussy eating, hypnotherapy can be an effective way to change things, even though it's been a long-term issue.
Fussy eating hypnotherapy can be very effective for changing eating habits. It allows access to the unconscious mind, which is where habits are formed.
Accessing the unconscious mind means that hypnotherapy can address factors behind fussy eating. This can tackle unhealthy and negative thoughts and behaviours around problem foods. They can be replaced with a healthier approach to eating.
Hypnotherapy for Extremely Picky Eaters
If you or your child is a really picky eater, eating a balanced diet can feel impossible. Sometimes, it can lead to problems.
Very picky eaters can be at risk of deficiencies, for example. They may also lose weight.
Very picky eating is more common than you might think. It’s now recognised as an illness in its own right: selective eating disorder.
Picky eating hypnotherapy can turn the situation around.
Here’s a testimonial from a thrilled parent whose very fussy eater now enjoys a balanced diet:
"My 12-year-old son’s eating habits deteriorated over the last six years to the point he was barely eating anything. We tried doctors, dieticians and psychologists but nothing changed apart from his anxiety reaching the highest point ever.
After our first session with Sam we understood fully how and why this was happening.
He still has a long journey ahead and knew we would not get an overnight miracle but his anxiety is minimal and he is eating a lot more and trying something new to eat every week. I think even he knows how to cope with it which in turn is making him happier as well as us.
Thanks Sam for all of your time and help."

I’ve had a lot of success in helping picky eaters to change their eating habits and have a healthier relationship with food. This includes using hypnosis to eat fruit and vegetables.
This has been the case even when fussy eating is a habit that has persisted into adulthood. It's never too late to change things!
